Tennessee Volunteer corner Jermod McCoy is making an early impression during spring practices.
Tennessee corner Jermod McCoy was initially recruited as a wide receiver out of high school. He switched to the defensive backfield during his true freshman season at Oregon State and performed well, earning freshman all-American Honors.
McCoy earned the attention of several major suitors after a breakthrough in the former Pac-12, a conference that loved to air the football out and attack corners downfield. McCoy got plenty of reps last season to bring over to Tennessee, and he’s done that this spring. 247Sports’ Brad Crawford identified the players who are “making a name” for themselves during camp, and McCoy is among those names.
“The defensive backfield needed to be addressed in the transfer portal, and Jermod McCoy has been a headliner in Tennessee’s new-look secondary,” Crawford explained. “He started five games as a freshman at Oregon State last season and chose the Vols over Oklahoma, Texas A&M, Oregon, and SMU in the portal. The Vols lost five of their top six corners to the NFL Draft or transfer portal, and he’s a plug-and-play guy who has impressed so far.”
