Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Trevor Bauer has announced his decision to take the mound for the Mexican team Diablos Rojos in their upcoming exhibition game against the New York Yankees. Bauer, who won the National League Cy Young Award in 2020, aims to make a comeback to Major League Baseball after a three-year hiatus following his suspension by MLB and subsequent release from the Dodgers due to allegations of sexual assault.
In a statement posted on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), the 33-year-old Bauer revealed his plans to pitch for Diablos Rojos in the exhibition game on Sunday, as well as participate in five additional games from April 11 to May 8. Bauer explained that this arrangement would serve as his preparation for potentially joining an MLB team, stating, “This will help me stay in game shape and I’ll be able to join a rotation immediately if or when an MLB offer comes.
”
The exhibition games between the Yankees and Diablos Rojos are scheduled for Saturday and Sunday at Mexico City’s Alfredo Harp Helú Stadium. Bauer’s last MLB appearance was in July 2021, when he was placed on administrative leave following allegations of assault by a woman at his home. Despite denying the allegations and prosecutors opting not to file charges, Bauer was suspended by MLB for 194 games. After serving his suspension and being released by the Dodgers, Bauer pitched in Japan and made appearances for an independent team this spring.
With a career record of 83-69 and a 3.79 ERA in 222 appearances, Bauer aims to showcase his abilities in Mexican baseball while eyeing a return to the major leagues.
