Former Coventry City favourite Marc McNulty has waded into the passionate debate about Viktor Gyokeres’ decision to want to leave the club.
Fans were forced to face reality on Monday when the Sky Blues ’ leading scorer admitted in an interview with the Swedish press that he’d like to “try something new” this summer, amid claims that City’s price tag for him is too high.
The 25-year-old, who was speaking while on international duty with Sweden, is understood to be the subject of a firm offer from Sporting Lisbon, who are reported to be prepared to pay 20million Euros (£17m) for the player, which is at least £3m shy of Coventry ’s valuation. The striker is also understood to be attracting interest from at least eight Premier League clubs and looks almost certain to leave the CBS Arena this summer.
Gyokeres’ comments have divided opinion with some supporters thanking him for two brilliant seasons and not blaming him for wanting to further his career, while others were angered and accused him of trying to dictate his sale price.
McNulty faced a similar mixed reaction from fans back in the summer of 2018 when he signed for Reading in the Championship, having scored an incredible 28 goals in all competitions in his first season at the club – 23 of which helped fire Mark Robins’ men out of League Two via the play-offs.

Supporters were desperate for him to stay and help the League One campaign but he opted to move, joining the Royals for an undisclosed fee 12 months into his two year deal at Coventry. He then struggled to get going at the Madejski Stadium and went out on loan to Hibernian, Sunderland and Dundee United.
Now 30, McNulty has moved to the USA where he plays for Orange County in the second tier of the USL in the sunshine state of California.

In response to Gyokeres’ admission, one City fan took to Twitter to warn the Swede that the grass isn’t always greener, tagging McNulty into the tweet and saying: “Ask @sparkymcnulty what happened to his career once his agent got involved in a move away from #CCFC. Be very careful what you do now because this will have a knock on effect in future moves”.
McNulty then responded in person, pointing out: “I got a 4 year deal in the championship on 5x my wage… played for Sunderland, got two international caps for my country, played for the club who released me at 16 in my home city and now I’ve just washed the sand off my feet from Laguna beach. Got dinner in Los Angeles later.
