Matt Voll has resigned as New Philadelphia’s head boys’ basketball coach.
The longtime mentor told his players Thursday morning.
“I have decided to step away from the position of head coach of the New Philadelphia boys’ basketball program,” Voll said. “I want to express gratitude to all of the players and former players I have had the honor to coach in both the girls and boys programs at New Philadelphia. I am proud of our efforts the last eight years and New Philadelphia has been great for my family and I. I also want to thank the administration and show gratitude to (former Superintendent) Bob Alsept and (former Athletic Director) Ed Leggett for providing me the opportunity to be a head basketball coach at New Philadelphia.”
New Philadelphia ended up the 2021-22 season with a 17-8 record after a loss to regional qualifier Meadowbrook in the Division II district semifinals.
The Quakers had a few opportunities in the fourth quarter before the Colts put them and their season away 56-54.
The cupboard is hardly bare as New Philadelphia returns three starters next year in Michael Vickers, Carter Vandall and Colton Slaughter.
Voll, 51, took over the boys program from Chad Spurgeon in 2016. He posted a 105-46 mark in six seasons at the Quaker helm, including a pair of 20-win campaigns and district titles.

Voll has compiled an extensive and very successful high school head coaching record for both boys’ and girls’ programs.
Voll arrived at New Philadelphia for the 2014-15 season and promptly led the girls’ team to one of its greatest seasons ever.
The Quakers, who were 25-2 that winter, finished the regular season as the No. 1 team in Division I in the Associated Press poll and captured a district tournament championship before falling in a regional semifinal to Solon.
Overall, Voll has a record of 385-211 in 25 seasons as a head coach (15 years as a boys’ coach and 10 seasons as a girls’ coach).
He spent three years as the boys’ coach at Waynesfield-Goshen, seven years as the girls’ coach at West Holmes, one season as the girls’ coach at Carrollton and six years as the boys’ coach at Carrollton before coming to New Philadelphia.
At West Holmes, Voll led the Knights to a record of 127-37, three Division II district championships and one regional final game.
His 2010-11 boys’ team at Carrollton completed a perfect 20-0 regular season and was the No. 2 team in Division II in the final AP poll that year. His boys’ teams at Carrollton won five sectional championships.
Voll is a graduate of Bowling Green State University, where his father, Fran, coached the Falcons’ women’s basketball team to much success. His father is a member of the BG Hall of Fame.
