Many players from the 2023 roster have hit the transfer portal due to former coach Nick Saban’s retirement, but on Thursday a player announced his commitment to the new regime.

Former Washington quarterback Austin Mack announced on his personal social media he is committed to join DeBoer in Tuscaloosa and play for the Crimson Tide.

Mack is a 6-foot-6, 225-pound redshirt freshman quarterback out of Loomis, California who spent this past season with DeBoer and the Washington Huskies, but didn’t play in any games. He has four years of eligibility remaining.

He graduated early to reclassify into the 2023 class but was considered a 4-star quarterback and the No. 16 quarterback in the class of 2023 according to the 247Sports composite.

A one-year starter in high school, he completed 70% of his passes for 3,498 yards and 40 touchdowns with just five interceptions.

The Alabama Crimson Tide will now have Mack, redshirt junior Jalen Milroe, redshirt sophomore Ty Simpson, redshirt freshman Dylan Lonergan and true freshamn Julian Sayin in its quarterback room for DeBoer and his offensive staff.

Mack becomes the first player to follow DeBoer from Washington to Tuscaloosa, but high-profile 4-star edge rusher Noah Carter, who was previously committed to Washington, has been predicted to join the Alabama Class of 2024 by most recruiting services.

The Crimson Tide has seen 27 players depart via the transfer portal with, now, four players offsetting that by coming in via the portal.
